The Chairman Dances

Firstly, I'd like to thank you all for attending what I felt to be an excellent ManorCon. 250 gamers gathered together in Birmingham; obviously numbers were down a little from last years ManorCon when we were hosting World Dip Con, but this was to be expected. We had good weather with it cooling down a little from the general summer heat wave for a couple of days - which I certainly appreciated as a hot ManorCon can be an endurance test. All in all, the tournaments ran very smoothly as did the registration desk and all the other facilities. I was also please with the minimal use of the tannoy this year, this is needed for the Diplomacy event on the Saturday and also to give announcements that effect the whole hall. However, by gaining access to the tannoy controls and trying to limit announcements as much as possible. It was also nice to see two real ales in the bar this year and the range of food at the meals widen further.

The only disappointments I can think of was the lack of a bar extension on the Saturday night - we have enquired as to the reason for this but we believe it could have been connected with the presence of the Netball Championships at the University. Obviously, we will try to get an extension for next year or alter the opening hours to fit around this. The other slight problem was the presence of some of the netball fans in Lake Hall which caused the overspill into Wyddrington - we have raised this with the University and will be looking for exclusive use of the hall next year. There was also some slight problems with access at the start of the convention. Our contract with the University starts at 2pm on the Friday and for some years, some people have arrived a little earlier than this and been able to start gaming. This year, due to the Netball tournament, we were unable to get the keys until just before 2pm.

I'm also pleased to announce that James Hardy has joined the ManorCon committee to replace Andy Bate, James will be responsible for convention publicity. The rest of the Committee are myself, Peter Sullivan, Ken Simpson, Steve Jones and Kath Collman.

I hope that you all enjoyed yourselves at ManorCon, whether it was your first or just one of many and I look forward to seeing you again next year.

The Future of ManorCon

There has been some speculation about the future of ManorCon. Quite simply, the rumours that I have heard are not true. 1995 was not the last ManorCon and I can assure you that planning for the 1995 event is already going strong and that dates have been reserved with the University until 1998. The Committee were very pleased with this years event and how smoothly the convention ran and this has only increased our determination to continue providing a quality gaming event.

Due to unforeseen circumstances (renovation of the kitchens in Chamberlain (nee High) Hall - the 1996 event will be held again in the same venue as last year. Lake Hall, between the 19th of July and the 22nd of July, full details can be found on the flyer that forms the centre spread of this booklet.

Non smoking room

We introduced a non-smoking room for gaming this year and were quite surprised at the low level of usage. Given the demand for it on last years questionnaire, we are wondering if we signposted it correctly etc. As gaming space is limited at the Con, we shall have to consider it's future and your feedback would be welcome.

Current Tournaments

All the current tournaments will continue to run - although some may have small changes of format. 1830 will be replaced by a generic 18xx tournament as the number of popular 18xx games grows (and will continue to grow with the release of further games over the next year). This year Railway Rivals was run as an ad hoc tournament by Peter Sullivan, many of us missed the cries of "two more wanted for Railway Rivals", but this will continue as a tournament next year. Diplomacy shrank from last year as we weren't World DipCon but still remains the Centrepiece of the convention, we will be promoting the team tournament more widely and have a new team booking discount to encourage entries to this tournament.

New tournaments

the 5 a side football tournament will be reinstated next year if sufficient interest is shown. As ever we are looking for new ideas for tournaments for ManorCon. In general we are looking for a popular multi-player game, either new or an old favourite, which would attract a double figure number of games and about 30 players. Obviously, given the busy schedule of ManorCon we would expect any new tournament to be playable on an ad-hoc basis and also a volunteer to run such tournaments is always welcome as it is unlikely that any of the Committee or helpers have time to run a new tournament.

Hobby Development money

As many of you already know, Richard Walkerdine has announced the closure of the Hobby Development Fund to which ManorCon has both raised money and contributed over the years. This funding role will now be split between Midcon and ManorCon who will continue with the work that is ongoing such as the Diplomacy Box Flyers and the Convention Booklet and the ManorCon committee will welcome any requests for funding to promote the Games Playing Hobby. In general, if you have any thoughts or queries about ManorCon or would like to volunteer yourself to run a tournament etc., feel free to write to me at alaric@harlech.demon.co.uk.

And now, for the results....

Diplomacy

There were some minor rule changes from last year. All games played to a maximum of 1910 to provide a direct comparison in scoring. There was a minor change to the scoring system to allow for the two from three qualification in the individual round. Also, the scores were published after each round, this experiment proved to be very popular with the players and will be retained.

After last year's epic when we were World Dip Con, the Diplomacy shrank in size. However, the quality was extremely high and the team round was the usual battleground. Of all the Diplomacy tournaments that I have run, this was the most enjoyable and ran very smoothly. congratulations to the Also Rans (Toby Harris (capt), Vick Hall, Jim Mills, John Colledge, Robin Levy, Brian Frew and Shaun Derrick) for their impressive victory in the team event and to Jim Mills for his Individual victory as Austria which led to his victory in the individual event.

My thanks to assistants Steve Jones and Nick Kinzett for helping out on the Saturday.

On a continuing note, I am now in the business of looking for an Assistant Tournament Director to help with the Saturday Round. The hours and pay are lousy and the only prospects are that there are possibilities of promotion in a few years but candidates are urged, nay implored, to put themselves forward.

1830

The 1830 tournament was run by Richard Clyne and was won by Willem van Tilburg. 1830 seemed to suffer slightly in numbers this year due to the new arrival on the scene in the form of 1856 and will be replaced by an 18xx tournament next year. Richard is already working on an integrated scoring system.

  2. Lukas Kautzsch

Next year's provisional plans for United :

Saturday afternoon - Richard and Dave will run their usual knockout tournament followed by a meal out at an Indian Balti house.

Sunday morning - Ryk Downes will be running his own United League over 3 seasons, as he did at Manorcon 92.

Croquet

The Croquet Tournament run by Steve Jones was again extremely popular this year and was won for the n-th time by Stewart Cross. We shall obviously have to lure William Whyte back to the con or all practise.

and finally....

I must apologise for this booklet being a little scrappy and not up to its usual high standard of quality duvet-stuffing. I have been a little involved since ManorCon in job hunting and have managed to obtain a new position.
